Meeting Summary October 10, 2024

Attending: Hultgren, Waldburger, Thorne

The meeting, which because of an unexpected early closure of the transportation center lobby began at 7:15 pm in the nearby stairway to the second floor.

The effort to launch the Mansfield CWA chapter was reviewed – pilot training and recruiting; scheduling and software; trishaw gearing changes and battery storage/access; final route testing; and roll-out PR. Thorne will check on the Book2Go software to get a generic login (for further evaluation) and the cost of the application. He said he will also speak again with the recreation coordinator at the nursing home. The program’s liability insurance needs to be renewed which should be ARPA grant eligible

The remaining tasks for the 2024-25 fourth grade bike education program were discussed. 115 Helmets for the coming year are needed, two larger (24”) bikes will be bought to become balance bikes for bigger 1st time riders and pedal straps are needed for the special needs 3-wheeled bike. The program will again run in the Spring towards the end of the school year.

How to approach the gathering of data and the development of an equitable mountain bike policy on Town-owned lands (as recommended in the Town’s bike/ped plan) was discussed. Hultgren said that Storrs Center Cycle is willing to put a volunteer sign-up sheet on their counter to recruit people willing to gather data on trail use and help with developing the policy. It was suggested data could also be gathered via an electronic survey accessed by a QR code via a trail user’s cell phone. Apparently Mt Bikers are building features on some of the trails in School House Brook Park, which needs to be investigated and dealt with in future policies.

The meeting ended at approximately 7:45 pm.
